All employers must ensure they are paying their workers the National Living Wage (NLW) and the National Minimum Wage (NMW). They will be increase on 1st April 2017 and will continue to be reviewed on an annual basis.
Current rates (effective from 1st October 2016):
– 16-17 years old £4.00 per hour
– 18-20 years old £5.55 per hour
– 21-24 years old £6.95 per hour
– 25 years and over (NLW) £7.20 per hour
*** Apprentices under 19 or 19 or over who are in the
first year of apprenticeship £3.40 per hour
New Rates effective from 1st April 2017:
– 16-17 years old £4.05 per hour
– 18-20 years old £5.60 per hour
– 21-24 years old £7.05 per hour
– 25 years and over (NLW) £7.50 per hour
*** Apprentices under 19 or 19 or over who are in the
first year of apprenticeship £3.50 per hour
*** Please note that to qualify as an apprentice, there are a number of conditions to meet :
• An apprentice must work more than 16 hours per week;
• You must pay your apprentice for time spent training or studying for a relevant qualification, whether while at work or at a college or training organisation;
• You must offer apprentices the same conditions as other employees including paid holidays, sick pay and benefits such as childcare vouchers.
For employers who cannot commit to an apprenticeship programme, there are apprenticeship training agencies who can act as the apprentice’s employer in exchange for a management fee.
